The First School is the Dinner Table

September 07 - September 30, 2024

“The First School is the Dinner Table” is a journey by Filipinx-Iranian artist Aida Azin into the nexus of art, food, and cultural memory. Her work is primarily concerned with examining cultural viewpoints and self-representation. Intimate spaces like this one allow food to serve as a potent storytelling, connecting, and resisting tool. In her works, Azin urges viewers to consider the material and symbolic meaning of food in society and beyond.

Azin has previously explored the awkwardness of cultural participation and critiqued institutional racism through the use of food-related imagery and materials in her installations, such as “Brown Pillars” and “Vorovorong.” Food wrappers, for example, represented the artist’s yearning for acceptance in places where she was otherwise invisible and the bamboo scaffolding spoke to the labor that marginalized groups frequently go unnoticed. Azin continues her investigation of food as a political and cultural symbol in this show. Her artistic career is represented by her artworks, which revisit and reimagine previous studies while incorporating fresh perspectives. Every piece represents a new chapter in a continuous story of cultural reclamation and self-discovery.

“The First School is the Dinner Table” turns the space into a social setting where cuisine and art combine to provide a multisensory collage of experiences. In addition to viewing artwork, guests will have thought-provoking discussions and consider the significant influence that food has on our identities and communities. Explore how the act of sharing a meal can become a deep expression of culture, memory, and resistance by visiting this exhibition.
