Hello! We are

98B COLLABoratory.

An independent, artist-run space in Escolta, Manila. We serve as a platform for critical discourse, experimentation, and the presentation of contemporary art in the Philippines.

As a multidisciplinary art laboratory, we foster convergence among artists, designers, curators, writers, musicians, filmmakers, activists, educators, researchers, cultural workers, performers, architects, and students. Our goal is to engage our immediate networks and offer accessible art experiences that reach a diverse audience and contribute actively to the contemporary art scene through innovative projects.

We are a

Community + Network + Library + Kitchen + Garden + Shop.

The idea is to have a setting where artists and creative individuals from other disciplines can interact and work together while presenting art, design and creativity in different ways; be it a talk, a bazaar, a publication, a meal or a simple gathering.

Our beginning

98B COLLABoratory was established in January 2012 by visual artist Mark Salvatus and curator/researcher Mayumi Hirano, alongside founding members Anjo Bolarda, Con Cabrera, Vermont Coronel, Don Dalmacio, Mik Laborde, Pau Reyes, Gabriel Villegas, and Marika Constantino, who served as Director at the time. We began as a response to the need for alternative art venues in Manila.

Initially, we opened our studio and residence in Cubao, Quezon City—98B being our apartment’s street number address. In July 2012, we moved to Escolta, Manila, where we continue to thrive. Since then, our membership has evolved, with new members joining and others moving on, reflecting the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of our organization.

How we’re moving forward

We come from diverse backgrounds, professions, and practices, united by a shared vision. In 2023, we revisited the concept of "home" through the ESC Biennale, collaborating with various artists and groups under the theme "tuloy kayo." By activating spaces within FUB and Escolta, we redefined home as a place not just for individuals but for the community.

In 2024, we’re extending this imagery from a home to a bridge, focusing on nurturing relationships within our communities and spaces. We’re rethinking what 'community' and 'space' mean to us, considering both our 12-year history and our current sensibilities. Our goals include re-engaging former collaborators, building on past projects, and evolving our creative dialogue. Our team's diversity is a major strength, allowing us to bring new ideas and perspectives to every project while staying grounded. This helps us keep our work meaningful and effective.

@Escolta, Manila

We are located on the mezzanine floor of the historic First United Building along Escolta Street in old Manila, near the world’s oldest Chinatown. This Art Deco building, designed by Andres Luna de San Pedro, was built in 1928.

Escolta, once Manila’s commercial hub, is a business heritage district known for its significant post-colonial architecture and historical “firsts” in the country. Since our move, Escolta's rich history has become integral to 98B's identity.

We’d love to hear from you
